Abstract

Citizen science is a form of collaboration between the scientific community and society in general, which encourages active participation of non-specialized citizens in scientific research. This review article describes what is meant by citizen science, its relevance for generating knowledge and its connection with society, the importance for democratizing knowledge, and the development of scientific vocations. Additionally, it presents some examples of citizen science projects around the world and in Chile. Citizen science is a valuable tool for engaging society in scientific research, democratizing knowledge, and promoting the development of scientific vocations.
