The Need to Integrate Planetary Health into Higher Education in Health in Latin American
Main Article Content
Abstract
Planetary Health, while closely linked to the comprehensive approach of One Health, goes beyond its scope by emphasizing that human health is not only interconnected with that of animals and ecosystems but also directly depends on the ecological boundaries and the integrity of planetary systems that sustain life and, indirectly, influenced by economic, political, and social dynamics that exert forces on collective health and the systems ensuring our survival. In Latin America, a region rich in biodiversity but highly vulnerable to climate change, integrating Planetary Health into higher education is crucial to preparing future health professionals to face forthcoming challenges. This article outlines the fundamental pillars of Planetary Health education, including the interconnectedness of human and environmental health, climate resilience, environmental justice, sustainability, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Strategies for incorporating these pillars into health education curricula in the region are discussed, such as curriculum reform, teacher training, international collaboration, and digital learning tools. Key implementation challenges are examined, including financial constraints, cultural resistance, and technological inequities. Finally, the article underscores the importance of a collective and adaptable approach to successfully integrating Planetary Health into higher education in Latin America, empowering future professionals to effectively and equitably address climate-related health issues.
