Physical Exercise Benefits in Quality of Life on Rheumatoid Arthritis Patients. A Review of Randomized Clinical Trials
Main Article Content
Abstract
Introduction: Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic, systemic autoimmune disease that causes prolonged joint inflammation, resulting in damage of varying magnitude. The main clinical manifestations are fatigue, pain, joint stiffness, and progressive functional impairment, impacting the emotional and physical well-being of those affected. Physical exercise is a safe and effective tool for treating and reducing the negative symptoms of the disease. Objective: Show physical exercise benefits on the quality of life on rheumatoid arthritis patients. Methods: A literature search was conducted to collect information related to physical rehabilitation on rheumatoid arthritis patients. Only randomized clinical trials were used to compile the results. Articles evaluating quality of life, physical function, and functionality were reviewed in depth. Results: Five randomized clinical trials were included that demonstrated improvements in all the variables analyzed after incorporating a physical exercise routine, alone or with a complementary intervention. Control groups were included to compare the results. Conclusion: Physical exercise is a safe and effective tool that mitigates symptoms associated with the disease and shows benefits for individual’s quality of life and overall health. A multidisciplinary approach is widely recommended to achieve greater adherence to treatment and optimize outcomes.
