Abstract

Low back pain covers a spectrum of different types of pain, such as nociceptive, neuropathic and non-specific pain, which frequently overlap. It is a very common symptom, which is today the main cause of disability throughout the world. Therapy usually begins with selfcare and pharmacotherapy in combination with non-pharmacological methods. Pilates has recently been proposed to reduce pain in these patients. The objective of this work is to carry out a systematic review on the effectiveness of Pilates to reduce pain in patients with low back pain. To do this, randomized controlled clinical trials were selected, carried out in humans, carried out in the last ten years. The main database used was PubMed, through the National Library of Medicine platform. The results showed that Pilates is effective in reducing pain in patients with low back pain. The total sample was 335 patients from six trials. The frequency of Pilates was 2 to 3 times per week, with a total duration between 6 and 24 weeks. The measuring instrument used to evaluate pain was the same in all studies: the visual analogue scale. Pilates was effective in reducing pain, improving function, quality of life, physical mobility, disability, flexibility, balance, static and dynamic resistance, and increasing lumbopelvic stabilization in patients with low back pain.
