Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the effects of a progressive, station-based proprioceptive training program with barosthetic (compressive) stimulation on postural control, fear of falling, depressive symptoms, and quality of life in older adults residing at ELEAM Los Canelos (La Florida, Santiago, Chile. Methods: Pre-experimental, longitudinal study with pre-/post-intervention measurements. A non-probabilistic convenience sample of 12 institutionalized older adults (M = 79.7 years; SD = ±4.71) voluntarily participated in an 8-week proprioceptive training program, twice per week. Outcomes included the Berg Balance Scale (BBS), Timed Up and Go (TUG), Short FES-1, the 15-item Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15), and the WHOQOL-BREF. Sociodemographic variables and outcome cutoffs were summarized with measures of central tendency and frequencies. Paired Student’s t tests were used for pre-/post comparisons, and Cohen’s d quantified effect size.Results: Statistically significant differences were observed for all dependent variables (p < 0.05), with large effect sizes for each (d > 0.8).Conclusion: The progressive, station-based proprioceptive training program with barosthetic stimulation produced significant improvements in postural control and quality of life, and reductions in fear of falling and depressive symptoms among institutionalized older adults. Replication with more robust designs—including a control group and longitudinal follow-up—is recommended.
